Position Details

At Hydro One, a Cable Splicer apprentice serves an apprenticeship through the Hydro One/PWU Joint Electrical Training Committee to become a Construction and Maintenance Electrician.

The Joint Electrical Training Committee currently requires Cable Splicer Apprentices for work in Toronto. The apprentices initially will be hired in a central location and remain there for approximately 3 weeks. The majority of a Cable Splicer Apprenticeship will be spent as part of the Hydro One Cable Crews. The jointly organized program is a five year apprenticeship that, when successfully concluded, provides Construction and Maintenance Electrician Journeyperson status 309A qualifications. 

Regional Maintainer - Cable Splicer

You will perform duties as necessary and maintain power transmission cables, communication cables, control cables and associated equipment in a state of good repair and in efficient operating condition, by inspecting, testing, adjusting, modifying, repairing and cleaning.

Training & Experience

The apprenticeship for a Cable Splicer is made up of five 1800 hour work terms. Each term is approximately 1 year in duration. The apprenticeship includes 3 in school training sessions of 8-10 weeks each at a community college.

Applicants for these positions must have successfully completed Grade 12 or the equivalent including Grade 12 Mathematics, Grade 12 English and 1 senior Science or a senior Electrical Shop.

Your success is based on a good work ethic, quality skills and a great attitude. Previous electrical work experience is an asset.

Location

Regional Maintainer - Cable Splicer - Apprentices are required to travel and work throughout the province but will primarily be stationed in Toronto.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, you will be encouraged to apply for electrician opportunities anywhere in the Hydro One system.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to enjoying a satisfying career with fellow skilled trade's people, you are paid while learning and enjoy an excellent benefit package. Apprentices start at $25.56/hr which includes benefits, pension and vacation pay, with pay adjustments upon completion of each term.

Current Construction and Maintenance Electricians earn a wage package of approximately $54.89/hr which includes benefits, pension and vacation pay.

Position Demands

This work will appeal to those individuals that enjoy physical work that is primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You will be required to work at heights, ladders, aerial devices, climb steel structures and work in confined areas. Cable Splicer Apprentices cannot be colour blind.
